Supporting Children’s Social and Emotional Wellbeing

With schools returning to full capacity, some students may naturally be feeling apprehensive about this big change. The following are some tips to help your child re-adjust to their new situation:

  • Take care of the basics: make sure they have a good night sleep before school and a healthy breakfast.
  • Provide empathy: listen to their worries.
  • Validate their worry: remind them that feeling anxious is normal and common.
  • Help them problem-solve: encourage them to come up with solutions to their worries and their worst-case scenarios.
  • Pay attention to your own behavior: model calmness and confidence and keep goodbye brief. Be careful not to reward your child’s crying, tantrums, or protests by giving them more attention or letting them stay at home.
  • Focus on the positive: remind them of all the things that makes school great!

Remember the counselors are always here for you throughout the year whenever you need support. If you need to get in touch with them, please feel free to contact them on Teams.
